Churchill Downs Takes Ownership of Kentucky’s Ellis Park for $79 Million
CDI purchased Ellis Park Racetrack and Gaming from Enchantment Holdings, a subsidiary of Laguna Development Company.
Ellis Park, situated in Henderson, Kentucky, has been in operation for a century and includes a gaming facility equipped with approximately 300 historical racing machines (HRMs).
CDI intends to construct a new track extension facility at the Owensboro Town Square Mall in Owensboro. The newly established Owensboro Racetrack and Gaming facility will feature an entertainment venue with 600 HRMs, a simulcast wagering center, and culinary and beverage services.
CDI has stated that they will invest roughly $75 million in Henderson County and Daviess County within the next twelve months, in addition to the acquisition price.
The transaction is currently awaiting approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
Our crew is dedicated to organizing summertime gatherings at ‘The Pea Patch’ to draw in more Kentucky-born racehorses and Kentucky coaches to remain in the state, while also bringing top racing talent from all over the nation to the Bluegrass State each July and August,” remarked CDI Chief Executive Officer Bill Carstanjen.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear added, “This is thrilling news for horse racing. CDI has demonstrated it possesses the expertise, assets, and drive to rejuvenate Ellis Park as a top racing location and provide exceptional wagering entertainment.
“This investment will guarantee that our Kentucky jockeys have the best year-round racing circuit in the nation and generate employment opportunities throughout the area and state. Churchill Downs is a fantastic corporate citizen and a crucial component of the Kentucky team.”
