Spain: Athletic Wagering Propels 80% Annual Income Increase
Data revealed by the Spanish regulatory body, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), indicates that total gambling income for the three-month period amounted to €313.3 million (£274.7 million/$334.2 million), representing a 27.1% increase from €240.8 million in the third quarter of 2022.
Specifically, athletic wagering income reached €141.4 million, reflecting a 223.4% annual increase (up 52.8% sequentially), accounting for 45.1% of total gambling income for the quarter.
The DGOJ noted that pre-match wagering surged by 108.5% sequentially, live wagering rose by 13.8%, other wagering climbed by 86.8%, and horse racing wagering increased by 63.6%.
Regarding casinos and their income, they saw a 32.4% annual growth to €142.3 million, up 11.1% sequentially. The sector accounted for 45.4% of total gambling income in the final quarter, slightly exceeding athletic wagering.
Slot machine income grew by 27.3% from the previous year, while live roulette income also expanded by 51.7%.
Furthermore, poker income increased by 26.8% annually to €26.1 million, representing 8.3% of the total market, while bingo income decreased by 11.5% to €3.6 million, and competition revenue also declined by 36.7% to €30,000.
Promotional expenditures are climbing steadily.
This period, marketing expenses reached €106.4 million, a rise of 13.9% compared to the same timeframe in 2022 and a 30.1% increase compared to the third quarter of 2022. This encompasses €51.7 million in promotional costs, €38.7 million in sponsorship fees, and €14.6 million in affiliate fees.
The count of monthly active gaming accounts was 1,185,452, a rise of 22.9% year-on-year and 21.1% month-on-month. The count of monthly new gaming accounts was 131,095, a reduction of 21.6% year-on-year but a rise of 23.9% month-on-month.
At the conclusion of the quarter, there were 78 licensed operators in Spain, including 54 casino operators, 45 betting operators, 9 poker operators, 3 bingo operators, and 2 competition operators.
